PATAN, a town in Patan district of North
Gujarat, was choosen for the Universtiy Headquarter.
The historical importance of the place can't be underestimated.
for centuries it had been the capital city of a large
kingdom extending far beyond the bounds of present
day Gujarat, under the 'Solanki' rulers and it is
also a very important seat of Jain scholarship. It
is the holy land of Hemchadracharya, a great thinker
who made valuable contribution to the studies in grammar,
literature of Shahastralinga and Khan sarovar, the
Jain temples of Panchasara and a few other remains
in and around the place testify to the glory that
was Patan.
After last Vaghela ruler, Karan Ghelo lost to Ulugh Khan in 1289 AD, the Muslims plundered the town, destroyed the temples and ruined the entire city. Today, one can barely find the traces of such a magnificent town. The most significant monuments in Patan are Rani ki Vav, Sahastralinga Talav and Khan Sarovar.
