Adulthood, Aging & Family Education HSHD-204

Objective :

To enable the students to know adulthood & aging period. 

To know the students about problems, psychology & behavior of adulthood & aging. 

Course Content :
Unit-I 
The study of development – life span approach, developmental task of middle age & old age. Changing demographic profile, overview of research & research method, use in the study of older person. 
Unit-II 
Adjustment in middle age and old age work/social/personal health and attitudes. Gender differences, Aging in cross-cultural perspective. Types of Age – Biological, Economical and Socio-psychological. Theory related to Aging- Ken-Kell, Howighurst, Erickson. 
Unit-III 
The Aged in the family and social residential pattern, Family dynamic attitudes towards successful Again. Care & welfare of the elderly, National & State level polices. Role & Obligation of the family, state and society. 
Unit-IV 
Family & Education
Introduction – Evolution, definition, types of family & structure. Marital & family relationship, patterns of Interaction through out the family life cycle. Optional life of styles- single parent, contract system, dual carrier families, adoptive, family, voluntary childless ness. 
Unit-V 
Family stress & cries – definition, theoretical constructs crisis situations over the life cycle, situational crisis. Guidance & Counseling – Need in the present contracts, Role of a counselor, counseling process, techniques of a counseling, family case study. 

Practical List :

  1. Interviews/Observation of a middle aged and older person. 

  2. Survey of policies / programs for the elderly. 

  3. Observations of elderly in families and institutions, planning programs for the same. 

  4. Visits to old age homes & Day centers for the elderly. 

  5. Prepare a blueprint for institutional services for the older persons. 

  6. Conducting interviews with the elderly on different aspects of aging. 

  7. Study the situation of the elderly living in families vs those living in institutions. 

  8. Conduct case study on the situation young-old and old-old. 

  9. Make observation of the case – giving of the disabled elderly.

  10. The practicals include actual working for home experience in houses for the Aged, apart from field visits.
